I was wondering, does anyone know what guitar tunings Jim uses? Some of you had requested tabs, but as nobodys replied so far, I thought tunings would be a good place to start. I saw Jim at the Spitz last night, which was a fantastic gig, and (at the same time as enjoying the music!) I was trying to work out what tunings he was using. If anyone could come up with anything, that would be great!

What did other people who went to the Spitz think of the other artists? I hadn't heard of either of them before, but I thought they were both great, one in a fabulously aggressive way and the other really dreamy and beautiful.

Hi, I don't want to kill the conversation by just giving you the answer, but the main tunings I used for the last album are DADGAD and CGCFGC (the same tuning but a tone apart), CGDGCD (the tuning for the majority of the 'Sweet England' album) and CGCGCD (the 'Nic Jones' tuning).

'Gypsies' uses a one-off tuning of CGCFCD - apparently a current favourite of Martin Simpson. 'Who's the Fool Now?' uses a VERY low AEAEAB tuning for which you need an acoustic bass string fitted on the bottom, so I don't do that live very often.

Hope that helps. Good luck working that lot out!

Update: I got given a pre-release copy of the new Nic Jones compilation on Topic records at the Spitz, and I have just sat and worked out the guitar part to 'Clydewater' - slightly different to the studio version. If you want to learn tunings and stuff you could do better than work that out.

See also the late-80s/early-90s(?) live version of 'Byker Hill' on a cheap Martin Carthy compilation on the Music Club label that is still available. Its the most harmonically sophisticated MC track I can think of.

That's really helpful, thanks. I will be occupied for hours!
