First heard if Jim when I saw him at Purbeck folk fest, must be getting on for 4 years ago now... but then had a fairly massive gap until the next time I saw him a couple of years ago at Brum town hall.
The idea of how young people are getting in to folk is an interesting one.. I know a lot of people my age who listen to the likes of Jim have grown up with folk in their family, but I think possibly feel that this is suitably, er... fresh, to be music they can call their own, that it's not directly listening to the same music as your parents. (I'm not convinced any of that makes much sense, I'm not phrasing myself very well).
For me personally, it was kind of the other way round - my violin teacher invited me along to play with a ceilidh band he played with when I was about 13, and I started playing and listening to folk, then my parents have got in to it through me and it's really a family thing now.

First saw Jim on the Big Session tour, was probably 2003 as the CD that was released after is dated 2004. There's not many artists I still listen to from being 17, but Jim is one of them!

One year and six days ago today I discovered Jim's music. Sitting outside in the pouring rain at Shrewsbury Folk Festival, all of a sudden hearing a rap (I now know it was Bubbz from Lucy Wan) and just being in shocked and amazed at the awesomeness of it all! Rushed in and sat in complete wonder and admiration for the sounds coming from Jim's mouth and guitar! I loved it! Unlike any other music I'd ever heard smiling smiley

Late 2005 or early 2006, went to see an old friend playing at the Barfly in Camden and Jim was supporting. I was chatting with my friend and he said I really had to come up and see Jim, so I did.

When did I discover Jim's music?

Don't know! Cor, ages ago it seems! When did I Am Jim Moray come out? Don't have a copy to hand I'm afraid. Was probably just a little while after that, as I do remember waiting for the release of Sweet England.

First gig was either at the Big Session thing or on a band tour at the old Zodiac in Oxford. I remember having an odd conversation with Jon Boden and my friend Sandra at that. Odd because Jon and I are both around 6 1/2ft tall and Sandra's not much above 5 foot, so she was on tiptoes and we were practically crouching on our knees grinning smiley

Also remember a little later on seeing Jim support Richard Thompson about 4 times over the course of a tour. I still have the circuit-board-leaf T-shirt from that tour.

Cheers

Another one from Folk Britannia here. Being a recent convert to folk music, and I was watching the documentary to gen up and came across this feisty bloke who said something about Spinal Tap, which endeared him to me instantly. The way it was presented in the documentary Jim was getting a few dyed-in-the-wool folkies' backs up, which endeared him to me again for some reason.

As it happened, this was literally a day or two after Skulk had been released so I got that, loved it, and over the next couple of weeks got all the others.

Ten years ago on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction programme.

Please see my thread of today about the concert Jim gave on 16 March near Truro.

After I had been listening to Kate Rusby for years, My mother suggested one day (when I was about 8 or 9) that I should listen to some Jim Moray! I fell in love with the music. The first song I listened to was 'Sweet England'. I actually remember this day really well.

He also meant that I rediscovered folk music. When I was 13-14 I went off folk music because I wanted to be 'cool'. We were studying the industrial revolution in school and my teacher put on 'Poverty Knock' by several artists before putting Jim's Version on. By the time Jim's version was played I had already been reminded of the brilliance of folk music. That evening I went home and changed my ipod library back to folky stuff.

When I was about 16 I somehow got into folk music, to this day I still don't really know how as I was rather into my mod and rock and so on and so forth at the time. I have a feeling it was something related to Lady of the Sea (Seth Lakeman) being played on the radio at the same time as I woke up every morning for three months. I vaguely heard Jim's name mentioned here and there at the time but don't recall hearing any of his music.

Then two years later, about 6 months into my first year of uni, I discovered that one of my course mates was also into folk (strangely enough also through a Seth Lakeman event) as a result we had a bit of an over excited music swapping session and she lent me copies of Sweet England and Jim Moray, and well here I am 5 years later still listening smiling smiley

Radio for me too.

Quite by accident I was listening to Paddy O'Connell on R4 on a Sunday afternoon (I never do this) when Jim and band came on and performed the Wild Boar. Think this was 2008, not sure - ended up being a major catalyst of for change for me.

This was not folk music as I knew it. I now appreciate and listen to (and even play) 'folk' music, but I just think of JM as a contemporary musician.
