Listening to it now. Up to Hind Etin. Thus far - awesome. He's a brave man to take on some Nic Jones covers so directly, and a talented man to succeed so spectacularly.

Wow, thanks Jim, just listening to it now, I'm loving it so far.

At least now I know what the tracks were that I'd never heard of when I was gathering the Top 10 songs.

Beautiful cover too Jim, I want a fox now smiling bouncing smiley

Thank you so much.

I'm no music critic, and no musician, but I can't resists offering some thoughts after three plays.

* I think it's the most consistent album to date. On all Jim's previous releases there have been (as there are on the vast majority of albums) some real high points, and a couple of tracks I've not particularly liked. This album has highlights, but there are no tracks here that I don't care for: it's a very good collection indeed.

* It's also, not co-incidentally, the most traditional album so far. From the interview on Bright Young Folk it sounds like this was intentional, to make something that was more acoustic and more suitable to play solo live. So, less experimentation, more consistency. Although this is Jim of course so there are still surprises in store - the arrangements for Courting is a Pleasure and Seven Long Years are very modern and very clever. But I miss the rocking-out.

* My favourite tracks are those two just mentioned, and, of course, the long-awaited definitive version of Lord Douglas which is indeed rather better than the one released on the Cecil Sharp Project, more sympathetic and closer to the version I'd heard live.

* Was really hoping to see Big Love, Horkstow Grange and The Wild Boar on here. The former two are, and are great as many of you already know. The latter, sadly, is not. Speaking of which, I was happy to pay cash for this (especially with a signed CD to come) but I really ought to get into the Modern History Club. Is there any way without paying for the deluxe edition of In Modern History? I wouldn't mind but I already have the standard edition so it seems a bit excessive to pay for and own two copies.

* The sleeve notes list tracks 1-10 so I assume the 11th track, Hogeye Man, is an extra. I hope so, as it's excruciating smiling smiley Sorry, but I mean, really, folk-as-rockabilly?

Cheers,
Matt

Have you seen that Nic (with his son Joe and Belinda O'Hooley) is playing some festivals in the summer? I'm going to get to as many of them as I can, but the Jones family have been very nice about me this year.

This was originally made as the 'acoustic' album out of a set. The 'electric' portion will be along later (but probably divorced of so much traditional content, so is the polar opposite).

Yeah - that's not on the album proper, it's just a bonus track for you... winking smiley

No! Thanks for the heads-up. I was too young to have heard Nic in his prime, and when I first discovered his music some ten years ago, it made me a little sad to think I'd never have the chance to see the man play live. I'll try and get a ticket for Towersey once they announce which day he's playing (I have small children, so going for both days would be a stretch).
