Jim's lyrics

Hey folks,

Been a long while since I was on here (the site's looking really good!) - although I'm now eagerly awaiting the 1st of May eagerly like everyone else!!

Anyway, in my absence I've done a little page with some of Jim's lyrics that I hope might be useful for some of you. If anyone can give me a hand - point out any errors that would be great (my hearing isn't exactly perfect)! Also if anyone has done maybe a rough Sibelius score for Longing for Lucy, that would be amazing!

Later,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Well done on the website! I think its probably hard to hear on myspace but the end of "My Sweet Rose" goes like this:-

"Every little move, every little thing
Opens a trial that I can't win
Pile on the pressure to see if I will break
This is more than I can take
I love you and I'll never let me go
But you hurt me more than you'll ever know
So turn around, walk right back
'Cause if I can't have you, no one can have you"

that bit was improvised on the spot in the studio - what you hear on the record is the first take (give or take a couple of words edited out...). The song is based on the traditional "Hanged I Shall Be" as recorded on the Albion Country Band (as they were then) "Battle of the Field" sung by Martin Carthy. Of the other new songs, "Nightvisiting" is based on verses from "The Grey Cock" and "I Will Put My Ship In Order", "Gilderoy" is based on Shirley Collins' version, "Dog+Gun" is from the singing of Coope Boyes and Simpson, "Lord Willoughby" is based on various texts scattered round the internet but mainly on the version sung by Swan Arcade. "Barbara Allen" is based on an American version of the song called "Barbry Ellen", "Fair+Tender Lovers" is distilled from memories of different sets of words, "Who's the Fool?" is nicked from Jims sister Jackie and has new verses evolved over the spring tour 2005. "Magic When You're Near" was written on tour in Australia in 2004. "Flow My Tears" is by 16th century composer John Dowland.

There are some other bits of words in other songs that aren't exactly right, but the songs change from gig to gig anyway... I would guess that you currently know the lyrics better than Jim does.

Well it's good to know I got most of it right anyway - listened to Sweet Rose again - it's still quite difficult to hear the words at the end - thank you for telling me those! Very impressed that it was improvised - not many people can do that!

Thanks also for the information about the new tracks - I love this forum!

Bob

Wow Bob - amazing job on the site! There were a couple of lines of 'Longing For Lucy' that I'd always wondered about so it's great to see them in print. Well done indeed!

Oh and the Nightvisiting lyrics?

I think it's "the burning Thames I have to cross" and "I'm just the ghost of your William-o"

Fabulous site though!

Fantastic! Thanks swirly ... been trying to figure that out for about a week! Now there's just a tiny bit in Sweet England ('and my mother...?') and then updating can slow down a bit!! Great to hear your compliments smiling smiley thankyou!

If it's the bit I'm thinking of I always thought that line was

"And my mother can earn but there's little for bread"

Could well be wrong though - know I have been about others.

Hey Bob!

Now Geocities is dead, have you put your site anywhere else?

Would LOVE to see it!
