I don't listen to the show on the radio, only the podcast, so I don't know if this comment made it to a national audience, but a friend of mine alerted me to it after he'd heard the podcast, saying that the singer I'm always banging on about got a mention and he was going to check him out on YouTube.

It would be great to have a lyrics page on here. I don't know how it sits with copyright issues as there are a number of songs based on trad stories and other old folf songs. It would be great to read what changes you've made in lyrics Jim from original versions. Plus my daughters fav song in the whole world is your Silver Dagger (despite it being tragic!) and I can't quite make out all the words when I sing it to her haha! :)

Hi all,

Anyone interested in an original copy of the EP?

Thought about listing it on ebay, but probably better to reach a real fan here.

I bought it via mail order after seeing Jim perform his showcase slot in the club tent at the Cambridge Folk Festival many years ago (before SE came out).

I've now got two kids and another car seat to buy, and having this sat on my shelf is getting too tempting to ignore.

I've not really looked at the prices of these recently, but a completed listings search on eBay shows this one ebay link

Anyone interested?

Thanks,

When I saw the show at Cambridge Junction Jim was using an effect pedal that he would sometimes deploy, when playing acoustic, to produce bass notes well below the normal range of a guitar. Does anyone know what this device was?

I was intrigued because it only seemed to effect the lowest string - whereas a standard octaver would have effected all the strings.

Hi all.

I went to see Jim last night in The Attic at the Railway Inn. A lovely little venue; a room above a very simple single-bar pub. All seated venue last night. Think tatty french cafe/railway waiting room/ 1970s sitting room with cafe tables and chairs, banquettes and a wonky standard lamp! Seats about 50, I think [pretty well full last night] so a perfect venue for Jim solo. A very intimate venue. I will certainly try to go there again.

Jim was just great; songs from all albums as far as I could tell. Just voice, guitar, piano and a bit of loopiness; not sure what the technical term is. Just perfect. And a chance for the folk of Winchester to demonstrate their singing skills and enthusiasm at the end. I tried to catch what those fingers were doing during Lord Douglas to make my insides turn but all I can honestly say is 'moving and stopping at different speeds'. Sorry. 'Is is true' was gorgeous. It was also so good to hear Sweet England and Lord Bateman live, as they were the first of Jim's songs I heard, on the Mike Harding show a couple of years ago.

I live in North Somerset and could not get to the Exeter or Corsham gigs. I knew I was working in Yeovil yesterday so I thought hey ho, just another hour and a bit to Winchester after Yeovil so I just carried on driving. So glad I did.

Are many of you fellow fans living in the Southwest-ish? My husband comes along to keep me company but it would be great to go to Jim gigs with someone who really wants to be there!

Just to let you know, Anais Mitchell is in the UK in June and playing St Bonventures in Bristol on 4th June.

Thanks for a great evening last night, Jim,

Hi,
I've just got the finished design for the Skulk t-shirts. They won't be ready for a few weeks, but I wondered who might be interested and what size they'd like (don't worry - I won't hold you to it if you change your mind...)

If you'd like a say, can you answer these two questions?

a) what size would you prefer of standard t-shirt? The options are XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL

b) what colour would you most like? The options are dark brown (like the skulk colour scheme), dark blue, dark green, dark red, a lighter colour, black or white. (I can probably get a selection of the two most popular colours)

The t-shirts would be premium soft cotton (not too thick) and in standard unisex sizing. They will feature an illustration by artist Alex Bertram-Powell showing me commanding a skulk of foxes. Here is a preview of Alex working on the design -

Any chance of offering the cover art as a frameable poster? It's already one of my favourite album covers of all time and as I've been buying albums since the mid 1960s you can imagine I've collected quite a lot over the years.

I've got it as my PC wallpaper and the flyer that came with my CDs has been bluetacked to one of the cupboards in the kitchen, but I'd love a poster sized print to frame and put in my living room.

Hi

I am a keen amateur photographer generally doing "people pictures". I have just discovered this one in my archive from 2009 (Folk by the Oak) and I am sure it is a member of Jim's band.

I consider it one of my better portraits (feel free to disagree), and will probably end up using it in competitions and exhibitions - nothing commercial. It would be nice to put a name to the face - and ideally give him a chance to object to me using it. And I would be happy to send him a good quality print if he wanted.

So ... anyone able to tell me who this is? And preferably point him at this posting?

Ta

Brian

PS. Looking forward to the Cabbage Patch gig

Hi Jim,

Thank you for speedily sorting out my failed attempts to join the Forum. Now in, at last!

Can you tell me why is is that a certain melody, or do I mean a tune makes one's insides surge, as your Lord Douglas did for me when I first heard it [Cecil Sharp in Bristol] and O Come Emmanuel?

Is there an answer to this? I understand the science behind emotional responses but why to a certain combination of sounds?

Your voice is heartbreaking but even without that, what is it about those melodies?

With very many thanks,

Have been playing this track to death over the last few days and really like it.

I can't work out whether it was done by Jim singing all the harmonies (which were then post-processed by a vocoder or Roland digital harmoniser or some such) or whether he sang only the lead vocal and then the harmonies were 'generated'.

I am slightly inclining towards thinking the latter, but am curious to know which is the case.

Sounds tremendous - however it was done. B)

Anybody know?

Cheers

Hello,

I don't know if anyone can help, but I bought the IMN Deluxe edition some time ago (this was after the release - I didn't pledge in advance). I got the CD/DVD but have never received any emails regarding the extra download tracks and would really like to get hold of these if I can. I emailed the site but didn't get a response. Does anyone know if the downloads/club membership was only for those who pledged pre-release?

Not grumbling at all - it's a great album - but I would like a bit more if I can get it ;-)

Any ideas?

Thanks

James
Jim, you look terrified of her in some of the shots, she looks a lot happier than you (:P)
Do you know if she's totally tame and domesticated? I love the way she has been taught to obey commands, I wish my dogs were as obedient at Sorrel.

Hi,

Given that we all share an enjoyment of Jim's music, and given his relatively eclectic approach to arranging and producing traditional material, I thought it might be interesting to talk about what else we like to listen to and see if there's any patterns, or any decent recommendations we can pick up off each other.

I use last.fm so I can tell you what my most listened-to artists are ...

#1 Jim Moray
#2 Curve - a 90's band that played a bizarre hybrid of aggressive alt-rock and techno.
#3 PJ Harvey - I'm sure you've all heard of PJ Harvey, alt-rock/prog-rock goddess :)
#4 Planxty - Seminal 70's Irish folk. I love the passion and energy (and the bagpipes) in the music.
#5 Steeleye Span - I'm sure you've all heard of Steeleye Span too :)
#6 First Aid Kit - Swedish "new folk" duo, not trad at all but utterly, beguilingly wonderful
#7 Mumford & Sons - UK "new folk" outfit who manage to make bluegrass sound anthemic
#8 Karine Polwart - I'm not a huge fan, really, but her album Fairest Floo'er was superb.
#9 Cocteau Twins - Psychedelic/dream-pop indie outfit with indecipherable vocals
#10 Underworld - Outstanding techno with (unusually) vocals

2011 Top 10 Jim Songs Poll (24 replies)

Hi guys,

Following on from last year's bit of fun, I've decided to run another poll of your top 10 Jim songs. I know that my favourites change all the time, and it'll give all of the newer forum members who weren't around last year, a chance to let us all know their top songs.

As I did, last year, I'll mark the songs Eurovision style, 1 to 8, 10 and 12.

If anyone lists 10 songs, but in no particular order, eg alphabetical, number of iTunes plays, drawn out of a hat etc, I'll mark them with the first song in the list getting the 12 points, the second song getting the 10 points, down to the tenth song getting the 1 point.

Polling will stay open until midnight on New Year's Eve, and I'll collate and publish the results in early January.

So, to start you off, here are my top 10 Jim Moray songs for 2011 -

01 - Spencer The Writer
02 - Nightvisiting
03 - Magic When You're Near
04 - The Lowlands Of Holland
05 - Poverty Knock
06 - Henry's Downfall
07 - Horkstow Grange
08 - My Sweet Rose
09 - Hard
10 - Lord Willoughby

Looking forward to getting your lists, and yes, Jim, you can vote too, it'll be really interesting to see what your own favourite songs are.
