As part of David Owens exhibition '5000 Morris Dancers' at the South Bank, a band including Saul Rose, Dave Burbidge, Sam Sweeney of Bellowhead, Sam Carter, Jon Fuller of Wheeler Street, Jackie Oates and I will be playing a tribute to the Morris On album from 1972. Ashley Hutchings will be in conversation with journalist Robin Deneslow in the first half, then we're going to play music from the album and others in the 'electric morris' idiom.

Hi,
Sorry I haven't been about much. I've been both very busy and also trying to make some tough decisions about where to go next. But a few things...

Deluxe Editions
Apologies, this has somewhat decended into farce. Believe it or not, I have only just received finished copies. I'm packing them as quickly as I can and will be including extra gifts for pledgers and subscribers. I'll make this up to you as best I can, but I am really really proud of the film so I hope you will think it was worth the wait.

TOUR!!
...is selling well however. I want to make this the best tour ever so we have big screens at a lot of the venues, special guests at a couple (no prizes for guessing who...) and lots of new songs to the set. There are links to the venues from the front page of the website - tell your friends, spread the word, and be prepared to jump around at the standing gigs. It's looking like its going to be brilliant.

Projects
I have a couple of things in the works for next year that will get announced in due course. One project in particular will be announced by the organisers next week - don't want to steal their exclusive, but keep an eye on the folk media for details after the bank holiday weekend.

Thanks

A little while ago I asked Jim a few questions in a new thread and Jim posted saying for
everyone to post their questions in it for him to answer.
That was on July 2nd, did I miss the Q+A session as I dont recall it happening, I know that sadly
out of everyone on here (anyone know how many members there are?) there was only 3 others who replied!
So can anybody tell me if it happened and if I missed it or if not, I wonder if Jim is going to do it now.
I guess he must be very busy right now, it being Festival season and all.
Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

I just came across this on the net, I hope its of interest.
Enjoy your Sunday. :-)

Horkstow Grange

"'Horkstow Grange' (The Miser and His Man-a local tragedy)" was sung to Grainger by George Gouldthorpe, and tells a somewhat ambiguous story of a local happening. Grainger wrote in his manuscript: "John Bowlin' was a foreman at a farm at Horkstow, and John Steeleye Span was waggoner under him. They fell out, and J. S. Span made these verses." Often, these particularly local songs would be written as parodies of other folksongs, in much the way that Woody Guthrie, for example, wrote a great deal of his material. Even if not immortalized by this particular song, the name of Steeleye Span lives on! (Folk Rock historians take note).

In Horkstow Grange there lives an old miser,
You all do know him as I've heard tell,
It was him and his man that was called John Bowlin',
They fell out one market day.
Pity them what see him suffer,
Pity poor old Steeleye Span,
John Bowlin's deeds they will be remembered,
Bowlin's deeds at Horkstow Grange.

With a blackthorn stick old Steeleye struck him,
Oftens had threatened him before,
John Bowlin' he turned round all in a passion,
Knocked old Steeleye on to the floor.

Steeleye Span, he was felled by John Bowlin',
It happened to be on a market day;
Steeleye swore with all his vengeance,
He would swear his life away.

as I bet you are a very busy man anyway. :-)
I would just like to ask you where did you come across the song "William Hollander" that you
sang at Cecil Sharpe House last year?
I wanted to ask you about it after the Gig had finished but I had to leave to get back home
for work the next day.
I haven't discovered hardly anything about it or its history and I really liked it and your
arraignment of course.
Do you think at sometime we can have access to all of your lyrics on the site please?
How did Meltdown go Jim and what did you play?
And lastly could you tell me what instruments ie: Electric Guitars, Synth/s? and effects you
are playing on that Fantastic opener "Bristol Harbour?
What are the words you are singing that are buried in the music Jim, I`m afraid that after Many Many tears on seeing Live bands and music which protecting my ears which I so regret my hearing is rubbish.
I am still addicted to live shows though big or small.
Last Gig Clapton/Winwood and on Tuesday Crosby, Stills And Nash in Paris. :-)

Hi All, I have been a fan of Jim`s since the first album but until now I have had problems
registering and logging on to this Site/Forum.
Jim saved the day for me so a Big Thank you Mr Moray. :-)
I have only managed to see Jim live once so far and that was at Cecil Sharp House last year
when Jim played with his band and what a Great performance it was as well I can honestly say.
Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi to everyone here, fans of the Best of the Best
Modern Folk/Rock Musician singer/songwriters. :-)

Peace,

In Modern History has been steadily climbing the Amazon charts over the last week - overtaking things like Seth Lakemans new album and the last one by The Unthanks a few days ago (usually the only English folk albums there), and now sitting comfortably in the top ten. If any of you have a moment, go and post a review on its page here - [www.amazon.co.uk] and keep it's star rating high... Thanks.

You could also do the same on itunes - there aren't any user reviews yet and it looks a bit empty. Interestingly, Jenny Of The Moor is the current top track with about twice the amount of single downloads than any other. iTunes here - [itunes.apple.com]

Jim where can I go to get some information about "In Modern History"?

Love the music, as always, but buying it from iTunes means I miss a lot. I would like to read the sort of stuff that used to be on album covers, lyrics, personnel, gear used etc.

Sorry I am old and grumpy - but would like to be able to read about what was involved in making it.

regards,

Hi there,

Has anybody got or done any tabs or chords (or lyrics, for that matter) of any of the tracks on Low Culture?

In particular, I'm after guitar chords for The Rufford Park Poachers. I set about trying to transcribe the music, but it's so difficult to hear what's going on with the other instruments, even when you block out some of the different frequencies. I've only found one video of it live on YouTube and the angle and zoom doesn't really allow you to see what Jim's doing, so I'm getting no clues as to what the chords and/or tuning could be.

Thanks for any help.

Well that was fun :)

Jim started with Three Black Feathers followed by Sweet England before adjourning to the piano for a rendition of Poverty Knock and Lord Bateman

I don't know if it was the threat of 47 verses that set of the fire alarm but about three quarters of the way through a wailing siren was heard. At first we thought it was an emergency vehicle outside on Charing Cross Road. But no, it was a fire alarm and the premises had to be evacuated ::o

Off down the stairs we went, Jim bringing his guitar for company. As a result we gathered on the pavement and sang a rousing version of All you pretty girls, followed by Rufford Park Poachers and a lovely ballad which completely slips my mind.

Finally the coast was clear and we could return to the cafe (:D

Interrupted set was finished off with:
Jenny of the Moor
Billy don't weep for me
Dives and Lazarus
Two sisters

All in all, a very good time was had by all (:P)

To top the evening off nicely, bought a copy of Songlines and have now imported the CD into iTunes, off to listen to it now :)-D
