Acoustic Guitar sub bass question

When I saw the show at Cambridge Junction Jim was using an effect pedal that he would sometimes deploy, when playing acoustic, to produce bass notes well below the normal range of a guitar. Does anyone know what this device was?

I was intrigued because it only seemed to effect the lowest string - whereas a standard octaver would have effected all the strings.

Cheers

Thanks all! I didn't know you could now get octavers that respond only to certain frequency ranges. Cool! It's always been a sound I have liked but, as Jim says, they are notoriously difficult to control if you are playing anything more than single note lines. I thought it was really effective - bravo!! Guitar sounds on this tour were very nice - so I would be interested in the detail if you get a chance to share Jim.

Cheers
I only have one pair of trainers at a time... For the last 13 years I've had a pair that I wear every day till they get holes in and then replace them. These are on their last legs now. They're just Nike Classics - not particularly unusual.

The Bass just comes from an octave pedal - the newest Boss one has a range control to choose which notes it will respond to. There are a few things you need to do to make it work properly, but only about 30% of it is in the gear. The remaining 70% is in the way you damp notes in the chord with your left hand so it's not as simple as getting the same pedal. Until recently I was using an off-the-shelf Fishman pickup and going straight into the front of the pedal but I've refined it a bit for this tour. There's actually three different pickup systems in the guitar now, and the main out-front sound comes from a mic inside the body. I'll detail it a bit more another time, because I'm still working on it, but I'm really happy with the main guitar sound now.

I took a couple of photos that feature the equipment at the Cambridge gig. I don't think they're clear enough to help answer your question, but just in case, here they are:
And in action, though a bit indistinct. Nice shoes, though:

Hi James,
Remembered your post when I was at the Manchester gig last night. It looks like an extra pickup going to a separate control pedal, which only picks up the bottom two strings. Not certain but that's what it looked like to me...
