I'm sure all will become clear when we eventually get to hear all Jim's new material (I've heard 'Sweet Rose' and 'Nightvisiting' so far on myspace and am madly in love with both of them) - it's very difficult to discern the appropriacy of an album cover when viewed out of context. But if Jim says it fits then that's all the justification I need!

I want to make a CD just so I can get david and david to do my photography for me. They are absolutely amazing and I never failed to be bowled over by the ingenuity of their work. I'm looking forward to the sleeve art almost as much as the music. Only almost, mind!

I'm not sure Jim would think the gaelic font is closer to what he is about... There is nothing remotely gaelic or indeed celtic about the music, while there is every connection with the pop culture iconography that the pictures reference.

I think you may have a different idea of what the roots of the music are from what is intended by Jim.

I think they are brilliant pictures but seem too far from the roots of the music to express what Jim seems to be about maybe this could be righted with a more folky font e.g. the gaelic style one used on the webpage

*wipes the f word from brain*

If I was in a record store and saw the first picture on that site as an album cover I'd pick it up if I'd never heard of it.

It's modern, beautiful, artistic and just wow...

As are the others.

If you're re-interpreting traditional music, then why not re-interpret how it's portrayed and depicted in art as well?

It doesn't detract from the quality of the songs and music. If anything Jim and the like are doing more to make the tradition a bit more relevant to a lot of people today...

...well for a start the music isn't 'folky'. Traditional songs, but not folk music - that word has too many connotations and too much extra baggage. For the forseeable future that word is banned at camp Jmo (hence the "folk is a four letter word badges" from the last tour - more on this campaign closer to the time).

An edit is required I think, based on webbys comments below:

The third picture would be best for a cover - I think it's the one which I like best - the pics are great ... certainly different from Sweet England - but then if the music is going to be so different then... oh, talking of which, I haven't been able to get to a concert recently - a sample on the site would be cool!

I guess my first impression of them was that they weren't very f*** (a four letter word!), but they are incredible, and ... yes, definitely the light background...

david and david have been responsible for all of Jims artwork so far, as well as designing the t-shirts that you can buy in the webshop. They have also designed artwork for Jim Causleys new album and the Oysterband Big session disc.

Also, if you have footage of the 2004 folk awards when Jim won some stuff, they were seated with Jim and the band and are quite visible on the broadcast. Sweet England was (I think) the first cover they had done as a partnership, and they are now well on the way to being THE designers to go to in certain circles. We are forever in thier debt really.

BTW, the album artwork hasn't been confirmed yet. What do you all think to having one of those photos on the front? Does it say the right things to the outside world about Jim and traditional music? Or is it just confusing the issue? All comments appreciated.

The same guys did the artwork for Spiers & Boden's two new albums, Tunes and Songs. Seems like they're getting a reputation for avant-folk work
